SERMI Certification: What It Means For You

If your business reprogrammes replacement car keys and fobs, a major change in industry regulations will affect you in 2024 with the introduction of SERMI certification. Without this, you will no longer be authorised to access vehicle security information, so it is vital that you act quickly to prepare for the change.

In this article, we’ll explain what SERMI is, who it affects, and how you can register.

What Is SERMI?

From 1st April 2024, access to vehicle security software will be exclusively granted to individuals and businesses that possess SERMI certification. SERMI – Security Related Vehicle Repair and Maintenance Information – is a Europe-wide standardised framework that is designed to ensure secure and controlled access to vehicle repair and maintenance information (RMI). It enables independent operators to access protected vehicle data for diagnostics and repairs, while safeguarding against unauthorised use.

First introduced in Sweden before being rolled out across the European Union and UK, SERMI is the result of decades of negotiations between vehicle manufacturers to develop a system that requires a single master certificate to access vehicles’ RMI. Because a separate accreditation will not be required for each manufacturer, the new system will save time and money by providing authorised access to RMI via a central approvals platform.

The SERMI certificate will replace separate access to the security software of all brands of car and will be valid for five years.

Who Will Need A SERMI Certificate?

SERMI will be mandatory for any vehicle technician or business that works on or with vehicle security information, including software, components, or features that are intended to prevent a vehicle from being stolen. Tracking software will also be included under the new scheme.

Are Any Security Features Excluded From SERMI?

Physical security products, such as keys, locks, remote controls, and handheld transmitters are not covered by the new regulations. Therefore, you’ll be able to continue to order replacement car keys and remote fobs from Advanced Keys as in the past. However, if you need to access a vehicle’s security information, for example to programme new car keys with a specialist car key reprogramming device, you will need to obtain SERMI certification.

In simple terms, obtaining physical security equipment is not affected by SERMI; any work with a vehicle’s digital security measures requires certification.

How Do I Become SERMI Certified?

UK vehicle auto locksmiths, vehicle technicians, and garages should apply to RMI Standards and Certification (RMISC) to obtain a SERMI certificate. Applications will be assessed in accordance with the established rules and processes in the SERMI scheme.

As part of the application you will need to provide:

  • Documentary evidence of business ownership.
  • Public Liability insurance certification in excess of £1m.
  • Evidence and a declaration of a legitimate business.
  • A basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate for the business owner or person with significant control and their nominated employee(s).
  • Evidence of work within the automotive industry.
