Digital car keys promise a lot but can carry a lot of risks. Knowing the pros and cons can help your customers to decide which is the better option.
Is Keyless Access The Future Of The Automotive Industry?
Advances in remote technology have stimulated a revolution in the automotive sector in recent years, with keyless access being just one of many developments. While vehicle security has been one of the main reasons why car manufacturers have moved away from traditional metal blade keys, changing consumer expectations, convenience, and the need for enhanced access and vehicle sharing are also important factors.
Given the pace of change, is keyless access here to stay and how will the technology evolve in the future?
What Is Keyless Car Entry?
Keyless car entry is a system that allows vehicle owners to unlock the doors without handling the key (or more often a key fob). Instead, the vehicle automatically detects the fob when it is in close range, so the key can be conveniently left in a pocket or bag. After exiting the vehicle, the locks will be automatically activated so there is no possibility that the car can be accidentally left unlocked.
Also, keyless cars do not require a key to be inserted into the ignition to start the engine. Instead, the driver only needs to press a start/stop button, so long as the key fob is inside the vehicle. If the fob isn’t present, the engine will not start.
Some vehicle manufacturers are introducing digital car keys which take keyless car entry a step further. With a digital key, the vehicle can be unlocked, locked, or started using a smartphone with NFC/UWB technology.
Common uses of this system include:
- Vehicle owners sharing ‘keys’ with family members or friends for a fixed period, without having to physically hand over the key fob.
- If the key has been misplaced, the driver can still gain access to and drive the vehicle.
- People hiring cars no longer having to check-in at a rental desk if the digital key has been shared with them in advance.
- Drivers of company cars can access vehicles for a specific duration.
Overall, a digital car key system enhances the experience for private and business vehicle owners and gives them greater control over vehicle use and management, without compromising on security.
Which Cars Have Fully Digital Car Keys?
Hyundai is one of the vehicle manufacturers that are at the forefront of digital car key technology, having introduced it in 2020 with the release of the Hyundai Sonata. Other manufacturers that have also incorporated the feature include General Motors, BMW, and Kia.
Digital keys will be integrated into the new and redesigned models of these manufacturers and are likely to become the industry norm for many cars as conventional key blades and smart fobs are gradually discontinued.
