An Auto Locksmith’s Beginner Guide To Car Key Programming Equipment

  • Blog

Half a century ago, obtaining a replacement car key was relatively simple. Flat metal blade keys could be easily cut using the spare as a template, a service that could be obtained on the high street for a minimal price.

However, advances in car key technology, driven by the need to improve vehicle security, have made it more difficult to obtain replacements. Electronic car keys or remote fobs are now overwhelmingly the norm and cannot be easily copied without specialist equipment to program the replacement.

In this car key programming guide, we’ll explain how modern car keys can be programmed and the specialist equipment that auto locksmiths and garages will need when setting up a car key programming service for the first time.

What Is Car Key Programming?

Most modern cars are accessed and started using a key or fob that contains a transponder microchip that is tuned by the manufacturer to the engine. A password is stored on the chip and is checked by a reader integrated into the dashboard or immobiliser: a match allows the car to be opened and started. This means that a physical copy of a key that has not been programmed cannot be used to gain entry to the vehicle as the reader will not recognise it.

Car key or fob programming is a fast and convenient solution. Specialist programming equipment allows a transponder hidden in a key or fob to be paired with the vehicle so that it is recognised as genuine. Different types of keys can be programmed, including remote key fobs (with and without key blades), flip keys with key cards, and integrated transponder chips.

What Equipment Is Required To Program A Key Fob To A Car?

The process of programming a replacement key or fob is universal and involves the following steps and equipment:

  1. The vehicle is checked to identify the make, model, and year so that the correct blank keys are selected for programming.
  2. The password is recovered from the car, through an onboard procedure, an OBD2 scanner, or EEPROM programming.
  3. Car diagnostic tools can also be used to communicate with the immobiliser system and reset it so that it can be paired with a new blank transponder, or to retrieve PIN codes.
  4. Key programmers are used to program the blank transponder chip so that it matches the code stored by the vehicle. Equipment must be selected for the make and model of the car, and the type of key being programmed.
  5. Testing ensures that the new keys work correctly, with additional programming to resolve any minor issues.
